Story about Slovenian Alps

The most powerful peaks rise in the north-western region of Slovenia. Triglav, the highest Slovenian mountain and the symbol of the country, reigns in the Julian Alps and lent its name to the only national park in Slovenia. The Karavanke mountain range stretches over the far northern part of the country. Its southern slopes provide beautiful mountain views over the Ljubljana Basin, and the neighbouring Austria can be seen on its northern side. Towards the east, the range proceeds into the glistening Kamnik-Savinja Alps. Experience glacial valleys, friendly villages, green forests, high Alpine flowers and meadows. Welcome to the Kingdom of the Goldenhorn.

Triglav National Park (TNP) is considered one of the oldest European parks, and the early recordings of its protected status date back to 1906. The park covers four per cent of the entire territory of Slovenia and combines the most beautiful natural gems of Slovenia. The park is also known as the Kingdom of the Goldenhorn. The local are well acquainted with the tales of the chamois with golden horns. Explore the mountains along the marked hiking trails or by bike. The branched paths lead along the magnificent glacial valley of Tamar, through the wooded Jelovica Plateau all the way to the high peaks of the Julian Alps. Touch the sky and embrace the 360-degree panoramic view of the landscape on the roof of Slovenia. Triglav is the highest Slovenian mountain measuring 2,864 metres. If your preferred means of transport in nature are two wheels, we recommend a unique challenge. Mountain biking to the Vršič Pass is a special experience. You can also cycle on the Pokljuka Plateau where renowned international biathlon competitions take place in winter months. The spirit of sports is also present in Planica, where the largest ski jump hill in the world can be found. Planica is known all around the world for ski jumping, and world records are broken here every year at the finals of the Ski Jumping World Cup. Skiing and other winter delights await you in Kranjska Gora, Krvavec and Vogel.

When visiting Triglav National Park, it is nice to find refreshment in Lake Bohinj. You can have a swim in the warm summer months in the lake, enjoy a boat ride or different water sports. When a thick layer of ice is formed in winter, the lake attracts many ice skaters. The park also embraces the Trenta Valley, where the emerald Soča River springs. Due to its unique sites of interest, the Soča River Valley became the first Slovenian Destination of Excellence – EDEN. The magical Soča River offers many delights for all adrenaline lovers. Rafting and hydrospeed are popular water activities on the Soča. The water world of Triglav National Park is also enriched by glorious waterfalls, such as the Savica and the Peričnik and the wild Tolmin Gorges.

A special gem is hidden in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, Velika Planina Plateau, where natural and cultural heritage intertwine. This mountain plateau can be reached on foot or by a cable car. A true shepherds’ settlement with more than one hundred typical shepherd cottages is considered one of few still preserved settlements of this size in Europe and makes for an idyllic landscape. Try homemade dairy products and enjoy a delicious shepherds’ snack – sour milk and buckwheat žganci.

The most famous place in the Slovenian Alps is certainly the iconic Bled, which is one of the oldest and most impressive tourist towns in Slovenia. Listen to the stories of pletna boatmen who transport numerous lovers and newlyweds to the only island in Slovenia in a traditional boat. On the island, 99 steps lead up to the church with the famous wishing bell. Make a wish and ring the bell. Bled Castle offers the most beautiful view of the lake. According to written sources, this is the oldest castle in Slovenia and rises above the lake situated atop of a 130-metre high cliff.

It frequently happens that fairy-tale Bled leaves a lasting impression in visitors’ hearts.
