Tourism in Slovenia in the first half of 2015

In the period from January to June, the number of both arrivals and overnight stays of foreign and domestic tourists increased. In the first half of 2015, 6.6 % more tourist overnight stays were registered than in the same period in 2014. Tourists also generated 9.6% more arrivals in total.

The number of tourist arrivals and overnight stays also increased in June compared to 2014. Slovenia was visited by 7.9 % more tourists and the number of overnight stays increased by 5.2 %.

For foreign tourists, a slightly higher increase in arrivals (+10.3 %) and overnight stays (+7.1 %) was registered than for domestic tourists in the first six months of 2015. Between January and June 2015, tourist arrivals of domestic tourists increased by 8.5 % and their overnight stays by 5.8 % compared to the same period in 2014. Arrivals of foreign tourists in the first half of 2015 constitute 70.4 % of all tourist arrivals in Slovenia. Their overnight stays constitute a slightly smaller share (59.7 %).

The most arrivals were generated by tourists from Italy, Austria, Germany, Croatia, South Korea, Serbia, the United Kingdom, Hungary, the United States and other Asian countries. In total, they constitute 68.3 % of foreign tourist arrivals in the first half of 2015. By number of tourist overnight stays in Slovenia in the first six months, Italy, Austria, Germany, Croatia, Serbia, the United Kingdom, the Russian Federation, Hungary, the United States and the Netherlands are in the lead. In total, they constitute 70.0 % of tourist overnight stays in Slovenia in the first half of 2015. For almost all the key markets in terms of the number of tourist overnight stays, growth has been registered in the period from January to June 2015 compared to 2014, with the exception of the Russian Federation. The number of tourists from this country decreased by 22.6 % and the number of overnight stays by as much as 31.2 %. In addition to the significantly reduced number of Russian tourists in Slovenia, the average length of their stay also decreased. However, the number of overnight stays of tourists from the United Kingdom increased the most (+15.2 %).

Among all foreign arrivals, the highest increase was in the number of arrivals of tourists from the other countries of North America, South Korea and China. The highest drops in revenue were registered by SORS for tourists from the other countries of Oceania, the Russian Federation and Cyprus. The number of overnight stays increased the most among tourists from the other countries of North America, Norway and South Korea, while the highest drops were registered for tourists from the other countries of Oceania, the Russian Federation and Belgium.

Health (spa) resorts proved to be the most popular among tourists. In them, tourists accounted for 33.4 % of their overnight stays in total in the first six months of 2015. This was followed by mountain (23.3 %) and seaside resorts (18.8 %).

As expected, the tourists most frequently stayed in hotels (67.2 % of overnight stays), followed by campsites with 9.0 % and apartment settlements (6.0 %).
