Successful season in Maribor crowned by wine celebrations

Maribor has recorded a successful tourist season in 2015. Visit the cradle of the oldest vine in the world!

Known as the home of the oldest Vine in the world and the second biggest Slovenian city, Maribor has recorded a successful tourist season in 2015. From January to May, the city hosted 13% more visitors and had 25% more overnight stays compared to the same period in 2014. In October do not miss the Maribor Old Vine Festival. Visit the cradle of the oldest vine in the world! Maribor-Pohorje Tourist Board, the Municipality of Maribor and their partners honoured the wine-making tradition by setting two wind raffles, a symbol of Slovenian vine hills. One stands in front of the Old Vine house, the home of the more than 400-year-old vine. The second one is set in romantic surroundings, on top of a city Piramida hill, where visitors enjoy a wonderful view of the vine slopes and the entire city of Maribor.

Maribor is best experienced through a free guided tour around the city every Saturday at 10.00 in the morning. Local guides will gladly take you on a journey of thematic tours with fascinating stories, fun facts and tastings of home-grown honey and wine. For years the family Brač from Malečnik near Maribor have picked the grapes from the oldest vine in the world. Every tour starts at Tourist Information Centre and ends in front of the Old Vine House, where the Old Vine Festival takes place in autumn. This year´s 15th Old Vine Festival is one of the most important wine and culinary events in Slovenia, starting on 4th October with the 29th ceremonious grape harvest of the oldest vine in the world, and ending on 11th November with 32nd Saint Martin’s Day Celebration. Visit Maribor; try the best Slovenian wines and culinary delights of the Štajerska region.

Welcome to the wineries of Slovenia, the country which is a small-scale image of wine-making Europe! It is divided into three wine-growing regions, 14 wine-growing districts and has nearly 30,000 registered producers of grapes. Slovenians pay a special tribute to wine each year between August and November, starting with the harvesting season and ending with the celebration of Saint Martin`s Day.
