Bled on Rough Guides list of beautiful winter destinations

Winter is just around the corner. Rough Guides has put together a list of 20 destinations that look even more beautiful in winter. The romantic scenery of Bled convinced the authors of the list. Like they say: “It doesn’t get much more picturesque than Instagram-filter-defying Lake Bled. You can walk around the entire lake in about an hour, although it is hard to resist stopping at every opportunity to photograph the island with the snow-capped mountains looming behind.”

Romantic scenery and peacefulness of nature, covered in snow are one of the reasons to enjoy winter. Rough Guides has prepared a list of 20 destinations that look even more beautiful in winter and has ranked Slovenian alpine jewel Bled on it. With magnificent views all around, the best are found on the walking trail around the lake. Capture the Bled Island with church on it and Julian Alps in one sight. If the winter climate conditions are right, you can even walk on ice or ice skate to the island.

Bled Castle dominates the scene overlooking the lake from the top of the cliff and offering a stunning view of the town, lake and island. In addition to the view, the castle’s interesting interior and several hundred years of history are also impressive. Print a certificate on a reconstructed Gutenberg printing press in the castle printing works, cork and seal a bottle of wine in the old way in the cellar or make a coin in the castle forge. Enjoy the taste of cream cake kremšnita, as made only in Slovenia. In the last 60 years, over 12 million famous cream cakes have been sold in Bled.

Experience Bled while keeping to its traditions. Take a carriage ride around the lake or to the castle with a fijaker (coachman) in their open coaches, which have a long tradition in the town. Tuck in your blanket and enjoy the Bled atmosphere. Venture to the island in pletna, a traditional boat made by the local people and native to Bled. The pletna dates back to the 16th century, and can carry up to 20 people. The vocations of fijaker and pletnar are passed down from generation to generation and are family traditions. Experience the perfect winter wonderland in Bled.
