When it comes to that, wintertime is perfect as the cold makes us want to be hugged. So would you like to know the best place in Slovenia for couples during the winter? It’s all so close that in a single weekend you can skate on frozen lakes, visit mediaeval castles with torches and be pampered by top master chefs. We recommend a few secret escapes into the unknown, a romantic dinner or an unforgettable adventure. Slovenia is full of magical winter corners. Discover them and make hugging under a blanket at the end of the day even sweeter!
The Romantic 7
For those who love pristine nature: Snowshoeing in the Logar Valley and sleeping in a tree house
In the Solčava area, there is the Logar Valley landscape park which captivates visitors with the most intense shades of green during the summer, while it is blanketed with snow in wintertime. Walking in pairs in pristine nature is unforgettable in itself. But the true adventure begins when you put on your snowshoes and set out to discover the snow-covered landscape. Blend recreation with romanticism and become part of a winter fairy tale! During your visit to the Logar Valley, we recommend sleeping in the Raduha House for the sweetest dreams.
Besides a tree house, you can also spend a night in a traditional hayrack with modern comforts. Your taste buds will be pampered by culinary masterpieces prepared by Martina Breznik, a fourth-generation master chef who carries on the tradition of a successful local culinary story.
For lovers of culinary delights: crispy rose from the Goriška region and a gastronomic adventure in Goriška Brda
Did you know that you may be given slightly different, crispy roses in Slovenia? The Solkan regut, a special variety of radicchio, is the winter pride of the Goriška Region. It is so delicious that they sometimes dip it in chocolate! In the Goriška region in general, people are considered to be irremediable gourmets, particularly so in the romantic Goriška Brda, the 2015 European Destination of Excellence, where they pamper you with more than ten courses on New Year’s Eve at Gredič Castle. Experience a fairy tale between the Alps and the Slovenian sea!
For lovers of romanticism: skating on frozen lakes and a glamping experience
During the winter, visit natural lakes such as the Planšarsko lake in Jezersko as well as Bled and Bohinj lakes, all located in the Alpine region of Slovenia. When they freeze up, they are particularly magical and you can skate on them! This year, Bled provides more glamorous and romantic skating with a brand new rink, which is literally only a step away from the most famous showcase of cream cakes. For a different experience of accommodation, we recommend the Garden Village Bled, an innovative eco glamping village in the heart of the iconic Bled. If you would like to additionally diversify your romantic vacation the next day, you can pamper your taste buds at a higher altitude and treat yourself to Krvavec cable car dinner.
For those who love tradition: a carriage ride in Lipica
The Karst invites visitors throughout the year. During winter, visit the Lipica Stud Farm, a place of Slovenian pride, where the world-famous Lipizzaner horses, gentle and tenacious at the same time, have been bred since 1580. You will never forget a one-on-one encounter with the mythical white Lipizzaners in their natural habitat in Lipica. As you watch them dashing playfully out of their stables at the same hour every morning when they are let out to graze, romantic emotions will make you sigh. Afterwards, let your personal carriage driver, who looks just like the one from Cinderella, take you on a carriage ride along tree-lined roads
For adventure lovers: Escape the Igloo in Kranjska Gora
Treat yourself to an innovative winter adventure and escape from the real igloo before your time runs out! The entertaining challenge is based on a fairy tale game in the midst of unspoilt nature in which you solve various puzzles and are faced with dexterity tests. This is a real challenge for couples, as it becomes very obvious whether they are able to cooperate. If they successfully solve all the tasks, their love will be reinforced. After the completed challenge, we recommend a walk along Jasna lake, where the legendary Goldhorn, including the golden horns, can be found.
For history lovers: A night hike by torch light to the Old Castle in Celje
Welcome to the Princely Town famous for the Counts of Celje. They were skilled in concluding favourable marital deals with the Habsburgs. Consequently, they were the most well-known and the most successful Mediaevalmediaeval dynasty in Slovenia. On winter evenings, we recommend a romantic hike by torchlight to the mediaeval Old Castle, the former residence of the Counts of Celje. From the 23-metre-tall Friderik tower, take a sweeping panoramic view of the Celje Basin with the Kamnik-Savinja Alps in the background.
For underground lovers: kayaking through the Peca Mountain underground
Under the Peca massif, miners of the former Mežica mines excavated more than 1,000 kilometres of tunnels. The lower part of the ore deposit was later flooded by water that created magnificent subterranean lakes. Experience a romantic underground adventure 700 metres below the Earth’s surface and take a kayak tour through the mysterious maze of tunnels. If you are contemplating how to declare love in a different way, it could truly be unforgettable if you do it deep underground, in the midst of shimmering stalactites and turquoise water.
