Slovenia among the greenest countries in the world

Green, active and healthy Slovenia is strengthening its reputation of being one of the greenest countries in the world. Slovenia was placed fifth of 180 countries on the Environmental Performance Index – EPI, which is prepared by Yale University in cooperation with Columbia University and the World Economic Forum. The country is developing its own “Slovenia Green” certificates within the Slovenian Green Scheme. Visit Ljubljana, the European Green Capital 2016, which is also the first destination to be a recipient of the certificate. Here you can stay at one of 6 providers who are the proud owners of a Green Accommodation certificate.

Slovenia, the country between the Alps and the Mediterranean Sea, is gaining worldwide recognition for its green soul. The latest 2016 EPI report, produced by researchers at Yale and Columbia Universities in collaboration with the World Economic Forum, provides a global ranking of 180 countries on the Environmental Performance Index, which measures the level of protection of countries ecosystems and human health. Green Slovenia, with its unique natural features and resources, ranked in fifth place.

The Slovenian Tourist Board, together with the Association for Sustainable Tourism GoodPlace, has developed a national programme for the development of sustainable tourism, the Green Scheme “Slovenia Green”, based on the global indicators ETIS and GSTC. Its aim is to accelerate the deployment of sustainable business models, a certification programme for destinations and providers, and the promotion of Slovenian’s green credentials. The first certificates for Green Accommodation were given in October to 6 tourism providers and to Ljubljana, the European Green Capital 2016 as the first Green Destination.
