The sky is not the limit. The Slovenian pilot, biologist, alpinist and environmentalist, Matevž Lenarčič, is planning a new exciting journey around the world with the ultralight airplane Dynamic WT 9. As part of the project, GreenLight WorldFlight, Lenarčič will take off on 20th March in the specially designed ultralight aircraft, which will continuously measure the concentrations of black carbon along the route, making a significant contribution to scientific research for a more sustainable environment.

The mission of the project shares the vision of "small, light and green", reflecting the story of the exceptional characteristics of Slovenia, which may be one of the smallest European countries, but which is technologically outstanding and focused on sustainable development.

Matevž Lenarčič, who is known to the international public for previous flights around the world and to the North Pole, intends to fly 42,000 kilometres with 13 stops in 25 days this time. In collaboration with a scientific research team, his aim is to warn the international community about the serious problem of climate change, in which black carbon plays a very important role. Black carbon is made of solid particles that absorb light, and it is the second most important cause of global warming. The devices for measuring black carbon used in the project were developed and produced by the Slovenian company Aerosol, which is the leader in black carbon emission measurement instruments, holding some 80% of the global market. By 2020, Matevž Lenarčič’s ultimate goal is to collect information about black carbon in the areas of the mid-Atlantic and the North Pacific, Asia, the Bay of Bengal, the Middle East, the Mediterranean, Russia, China, the Himalayas and in Antarctica.

Besides being an outstanding pilot, Matevž Lenarčič is also an active alpinist, paraglider, environmentalist and photographer. He has climbed all over the world and, among others, has reached the summit of Broad Peak (8051m) in the Himalayas and climbed extreme routes in Patagonia. He is the author of 11 books (on nature, photography, climbing and flying), some of which have won prizes and been translated into several languages.
