Slovenia is set to welcome a new attraction that will probably be every beer lover`s dream. Žalec, a small town in the Lower Savinja Valley, is planning to build a fountain that spurts out drinkable beer. The fountain will offer a selection of local beers and visitors will be able to enjoy three 30cl drinks for the cost of €6. Costing an estimated €350,000 to build, the region`s authorities hope that the fountain will become a popular tourist attraction bringing more visitors in the valley, which is also called the ‘valley of green gold’ thanks to the abundance of hops used in brewing.

The fountain will have eight automatic dispensers for beer, and visitors will be able to buy glass tankards designed by academic and artist Oskar Kogoj, an honorary citizen of Žalec and a world-famous industrial designer. It is envisioned that the fountain will play a role in beer tasting, thus reinforcing the position of the Lower Savinjska valley on the tourist map of Slovenia. Here you can also experience the most beautiful sunsets over the plains of hops and a historical experience in the nearby city of Celje. The Old Celje Castle is one of the oldest medieval castles in Slovenia, where the history of the Counts of Celje, one of the most important and the most powerful noble families in Slovenia, is set in stone.

Žalec is known for the rich beer-brewing tradition and its local beer Kukec. Its speciality is natural thermal water from nearby Laško, which enriches the flavour of the beer. You can try it in the Eco-Museum of Hop-Growing and Brewing Industry in Slovenia.

The news about the Green Gold fountain has already brought good promotion to Žalec (and Slovenia as a whole), attracting a lot of attention in foreign media, including the British BBC!
