Tolmin as Alpine town 2016

The municipality of Tolmin has been awarded the Alpine town 2016 for its efforts in the field of sustainable development. The town is situated on the bank of the Soča river, one of the most beautiful Alpine rivers in the world. In the Emerald land, named after the unique colour of the Soča river, the natural and cultural heritage offer a rainbow of experiences. On Friday, 8th April, the town of Tolmin is organising a celebration to mark the official start of the title Alpine Town of the year 2016. Tolmin, which is a popular destination for active retreats, water activities and festivals, will receive the award from the French municipality of Chamonix.

Alpine Town 2016 is a prestigious international title, earned by Tolmin through the successful strengthening of the Alpine identity of the local population and town. In the context of sustainability and innovation, the community repopulated the indigenous Soča trout, and was included in the area of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of the Julian Alps.

Alpine towns which have fulfilled their economic, environmental and social interests in accordance with the principles of the Alpine Convention have become a part of the Alpine Town of the Year since 1997. The prestigious title represents efforts in sustainable development and encouragement to ensure a green future. The cities are connected in the Alpine Town Association, where Maribor in north-east Slovenia and Idrija in the west held the title in the years 2000 and 2011 respectively.
