High number of tourists during the Easter holidays

Tourism statistics in Slovenia show a steady growth in tourist arrivals and foreign overnight stays in 2016. The majority of Slovenian tourist destinations and accommodation providers were fully booked over the Easter Holidays, which heralds a great year for Slovenian tourism. The Slovenian natural spas and health resorts are also recording an increased number of foreign and domestic visitors and overnight stays.

The visits and the number of overnight stays during the Easter holidays in the Slovenian natural spas, famous for their hospitality, tradition and proven beneficial effects of the healthy thermal and mineral waters, show a steady and increasing growth in the arrival of both foreign and domestic guests. The highest number of visitors came from Austria, Russia, Germany, Croatia, the Netherlands and Israel. Some of the main reasons for visiting our natural health and spa resorts are their location, the diverse surrounding nature, perfect for outdoor activities such as cycling, hiking or Nordic walking, and the local Easter traditions. During the Easter season, old Slovenian traditions come to life – painting eggs, baking poticas, traditional Slovenian cakes that have over 80 different varieties, and spending time with family or just by yourself.

The Easter holidays in Ljubljana, the European Green Capital 2016, were marked by a high occupancy in 20 hotels and 2 hostels. From Friday to Monday, accommodation was booked at over 65% on average. Many visited Vrhnika, the origin of Vrhnika Easter eggs – patented ornaments made by drilling little holes in the egg shells. Maribor, the second largest city in Slovenia, also had around 60% of accommodation occupancy.

In the warmth and sunshine, hotels and tourist workers in Slovenian Istria were also satisfied with the high occupancy in the hotels during the Easter holidays. They are expecting a successful start to the summer season and a high number of guests and overnight stays, since the number of foreign tourist is higher than the number of domestic guests.
