Ljubljana, the European Green Capital 2016, has quite an interesting history – from the pile dwellers to the Romans. During the Second World War Slovenia’s capital was surrounded by wire, and today’s inhabitants are happy to celebrate the anniversary of the day when the capital was freed from occupation. Join the celebration on the 60th traditional Walk along the Wire, or participate in the Trio Race. Ljubljana is particularly active between 5th and 7th May.

Ljubljana, Slovenia’s capital, was surrounded by barbed wire during the Second World War, and controlled by Italian, and later German, occupying forces. The city was freed of its barbed wire on 9th May 1945. To commemorate that day, the largest sports and recreational event in Slovenia, the Walk along the Wire, has been held every year since 1957. This year it will take place between 5th and 7th May. The event reaches its peak on Saturday, when hikers walk a section or the entire route around Ljubljana, which is 35 kilometres.

On Saturday, hikers are joined by joggers in the three member team run. This event promotes recreation and traditionally opens Ljubljana’s running season. What is special about this unique team run, aimed at promoting friendship, is that its entrants are groups of three runners and the group’s time is the time of the last team member to cross the finish line. Run 12.5km or 29km with your friends along the route of once occupied Ljubljana.
