The Batch of Baby Dragons in Postojna Cave

The world has been waiting for the famous proteus eggs at Postojna cave to hatch since the news broke at the end of January 2016 that this once in a decade event had taken place. In these days, first movement of the embryos in the eggs has been caught on the camera. These strange animals are starting to look increasingly like larvae wriggling around in their membranes, like a baby in a womb.

Small movements have big meanings - the proteus or dragon babies in Postojna Cave, the biggest Slovenian attraction full of glittering beauty in the karst underground world, are growing and progressing through the stages of development. Take a closer look at the movement on this link.

These events are particularly extraordinary for biologists that have devoted their lives to the study of the proteus. Postojna Cave’s biologists visited the French laboratory in Moulis, dedicated to the study and reproduction of Proteus, this endemic species of the Slovenian karst. The visit has been very useful for Postojna Cave’s biologists, who returned with numerous pieces of valuable advice.

Follow the process of the developing eggs on the Olm diary.
