It is dedicated to the bourbon rose (the rose of the 19th century) which grows at Kostanjevica Monastery and blooms in May. Find out more about the second largest collection of such roses in Europe.
Locals love to call Nova Gorica, in the west of Slovenia, the City of Roses. Kostanjevica Monastery above the city is famous for the tomb of the last descendants of the French royal family of the Bourbons, who sought refuge in Nova Gorica. The south wall of the monastery is adorned by one of the most complete and largest collection of Bourbon roses in the world, second in Europe only to the one in Paris. Roses bloom at their peak in May, when the city organises the Rose festival, offering scented, educational and delicious experiences. Yes, roses can also be a fantastic culinary ingredient. Have you ever tried ice-cream made of roses? During the festival, the city announces the awards for the prettiest rose garden in the town and for the owner of the best rose in private ownership.
