This year, Slovenia is hosting General Assembly of the highest and most influential representatives of the ECTAA, the European Travel Agents’ and Tour Operators’ Association. The meeting will take place between 25 and 27 May 2016 in Ljubljana, Slovenia’s capital, which is also the European Green Capital 2016 and is setting a pan-European example on how to organise life in a city to be environment-, living- and tourist-friendly.

The meeting of the ECTAA members will be here for the first time in the history of independent Slovenia, which is gradually establishing itself on the international tourist map as a sustainability-oriented country: green, active and healthy. Another significant acknowledgement of development activities and strategic guidelines is the prestigious title of Preferred Destination 2016 conferred on Slovenia by the ECTAA.

The data on the success of Slovenian tourism prove that tourism is a key industry for Slovenia, with great potential for further growth. Tourism contributes more than 12.7 per cent of the country’s gross domestic product, accounting approximately 40 per cent of service exports. But green Slovenian superlatives in tourism do not end here. The index of the 10 greenest countries on the planet, where Slovenia occupies the excellent fifth place among 180 countries, is also proof of this.

The sustainability orientation of the country is further reinforced by Slovenia Green, the Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism, which was introduced in 2015 by the Slovenian Tourist Board, by means of which the entire country was assessed in accordance with internationally comparable green standards for the first time. 2016 and 2017 are considered a special period for promoting healthy waters in Slovenian tourism. Natural drinking water available at every step is one of many reasons that the capital of Slovenia succeeded in winning the title of the European Green Capital 2016.
