A family visit to the baby dragons

Only 60 kilometres to the south of Ljubljana, the European Green Capital 2016, an underground world of stalagmites and stalactites welcomes you to Postojna Cave. The most popular Slovenian tourist attraction has one of the most diverse cave systems in the world, and even the Lonely Planet put it on their ultimate bucket list of 500 destinations every traveller must visit. Around 24 kilometres of underground halls and tunnels have been discovered since 1818, when the local light keeper, Luka Čeč, first discovered the cave. Since it was opened to tourists Postojna Cave has hosted over 36 million visitors.

The main reasons for Postojna Cave`s high visitor frequency and popularity among families is the accessibility of its tunnels, galleries and caverns. Enter the wonderful world of the underground system with its 140-year old cave train. It takes you to the beginning of the marked trails, which lead you deeper into the cave. In the company of the trained guides, who offer a tour in 4 different languages (audio-guides in 15 languages), you pass different halls, where every single stalactite and stalagmite has its own unique shape, form and colour. At the end of the trail in the famous Concert Hall, you can greet the olm, a creature endemic to the Slovenian Karst. Many say it resembles a small dragon, which is why visitors like to call it a baby dragon. Do you think they look alike? Since January 2016, the whole world has been waiting patiently for a batch of new baby olms, which is a rare phenomenon. Hopefully, we are expecting more than 60 new dragons.

When you return to the surface, take a journey back in time to the era of knights. Only 9 kilometres from Postojna Cave is Predjama Castle, a unique castle carved into the 123-metre high cliff and cave behind it. For this unique characteristic it is listed in the Guinness World Records as the largest cave castle in the world. Like many other castles, it carries an interesting legend. Have you heard of Erazem of Predjama? The brave robber baron Erazem remained undefeated until he was betrayed by one of his servants. Discover the entire legend on your visit to Predjama Castle and Postojna Cave.
