Padna – Treasure of Slovenian Istria’s hinterland

Slovenian Istria, in south-west Slovenia, is still unknown to many, but it hides a treasure of fascinating history, beautiful nature and culinary delights. Istrian olive oil is appreciated for its favourable acid composition and ranks among the best in the world for quality. From 4th to 5th June visit Padna for the Olive Oil and Chard Festival, which will present the native varieties of olive oil and dishes made from high quality, locally-grown ingredients. At the forefront of the event is the Istrian farmers market of olive oil and domestic products. The highlight of the 2-day festival will be culinary masterpieces made from chard.

Many say that Padna, close to the picturesque coastal town of Piran, is one of the most beautiful villages of Slovenian Istria. The village is surrounded by olive groves where some trees are more than 300 years old. It has been known for its large quantities of olive oil products for a long time. Especially in the past, locals supplied Portorož and Piran with fresh fruit and vegetables, in particular with “bledež”, as the locals call chard.

Between 4th and 5th June, visit the Olive Oil and Chard Festival in Padna to taste top quality olive oils from Slovenian Istria, which are among the best in the world. The locals will also prepare a rich range of healthy agricultural products and traditional Istrian dishes made from chard. Join an organised hike or bike ride around the lovely villages of south-west Slovenia. In the evening enjoy a glass of local wine, accompanied by a concert by the popular Slovenian singer Tinkara Kovač.
