Slovenia is the centre of sustainable tourism

The European Sustainable Development Week (ESDW) takes place until 5th June, when we mark World Environment Day.

The European Sustainable Development Week (ESDW) takes place until 5th June, when we mark World Environment Day. This year’s World Environment Day raises awareness and encourages everybody to take care of our planet. Tourism plays an important role in this process in Slovenia, one of the five greenest countries in the world and the host of the prestigious Global Green Destinations Day. One of the key green events of the year, it will take place in Ljubljana, the European Green Capital, 27-28th September, and the TOP 100 Green Destinations of the world will be awarded.

The Slovenian Tourist Board (STB) puts sustainability at the core of development and promotional activities, and aims at more responsible behaviour towards the environment and the positioning of green Slovenia in the world. It has developed the Green Scheme of Slovenian tourism, aiming to evaluate every Slovenian destination according to the international standards of sustainability. On World Tourism Day on 27th September, Ljubljana and Slovenia will host the prestigious Global Green Destinations Day, supported by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council.

The principles of sustainable development cover the equal treatment of economic, social and environmental components. This year, the aim of the European Sustainable Development Week is to raise awareness about the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development – the agreement of the international community to eradicate poverty, reduce inequality, ensure progress, and protect the environment today and for future generations.
