110 years of Bohinj Railway

The Bohinj railway, connecting Jesenice with Nova Gorica in West Slovenia, is celebrating its 110 year anniversary. The railway is proud of its almost unaltered 28 tunnels, five galleries and 68 bridges. When it opened in 1906, it was considered to be the shortest connection between the Upper Austrian and German ironworks and the port of Trieste. It still remains one of the most picturesque railways in the area, with links to Central Europe and the Mediterranean.

Recently, the authors of the popular travel guide, Lonely Planet, have compiled a list of the ten most often overlooked rail journeys. The list ranked the Bohinj railway, linking western Slovenia to Italy, in first place. The author said it was "an almost perfect railway adventure that most people have never heard about".

In June 2016, the Bohinj railway is celebrating the 110th anniversary of its opening in 1906. In the decades that followed, the railway escaped modernization and thus has maintained its original form to this day.

The Bohinj Railway links the diverse and beautiful landscapes from the Alps to the Mediterranean and has been a symbol of the cooperation between the different nations until this very day. Despite two World Wars, it has managed to maintain most of the buildings that make it attractive. The Bohinj Line has already entered UNESCO’s waiting list, being part of the Walk of Peace from the Alps to the Adriatic, which includes military facilities, museums and cemeteries.
