Ready for numerous adventures? Spend a weekend at the Valley of Soča, one of the most beautiful Alpine rivers that enchants with its emerald colour, in Idrija, the oldest Slovenian mining town situated in the midst of unspoiled nature, or in the Brda Hills, a landscape where the air is intoxicating and views stretch from the Alps all the way to the sea.

Emerald dreams at the Soča Valley

Start your two day trip to the picturesque and mysterious Tolmin Gorges. The gorges are the entrance to the Triglav National Park and also its lowest point of altitude. The circular route runs past many attractions such as the wedge shaped rock called Bear’s Head or the Devil’s Bridge, which rises spectacularly 60 metres above the Tolminka river. Then, you can also travel back in time to the Isonzo Front and World War I. The Walk of Peace from the Alps to the Adriatic winds all the way to the sea. Many remains of the Isonzo Front and an open air museum with pits and bunkers are located at the ridge of Kolovrat, which is the most popular en-route stopping point due to its beautiful view. To avoid heat, plunge into the warmest alpine river called Natisone with a well-arranged swimming area and spend the night at one of the many camps or glamping facilities in the valley, located amidst idyllic mountain scenery along the emerald river.

Fishing along the historical river

After the Soča Valley, you can visit Idrija, which made the UNESCO’s World Heritage List with the once second largest mercury mine in the world. The Idrijca river, its valley and the steep slopes rising above it as well as the clear water invite to be discovered along with many other treasures. The area is magical and green everywhere you look, so do take a fishing rod and enjoy fly fishing. After fishing at this historical river, we recommend a visit to the town museum at the Gewerkenegg Castle and the Idrija lace exhibition. Enjoy the idrijski žlikrofi, tasty potato dumplings filled with boiled potato, bacon and spices.

From vine to wine barrels

Sundays are just perfect for visiting the Brda Hills dotted with fruit trees and vines and their charming little villages featuring castles and churches that are visible from afar and found above the lower river flow of an emerald beauty called Soča. The Brda Hills are a land of invigorating moments, so why not experience them? When a bit tired and, being a true hedonist that you undoubtedly are, we recommend you to rent an electric bike which will make cycling along this rolling landscape a real pleasure. Ride your bike from the entrance to the beautiful Dobrovo Castle to any of the many wine cellars. Let the local winemaker show you their wine barrels, taste the high quality wines the locals are famous for around the world, and make sure to try something special as the Brda Hills cuisine draws inspiration from local traditions.
