Since the end of January 2016, the world has been following the rare phenomenon of the olm’s reproduction. In June, the last eggs from the batch hatched and Postojna Cave is proud to announce that the world is richer by 22 new olm larvae. All of them are in the cave laboratory, which initially functioned as an improvised controlled environment for the eggs, and now functions as a real laboratory, adapted to the needs of the larvae and the research of the biologists.
Although the planned diet and feeding of the larvae seems to be going the right way for their development, the biologists and researchers are still careful. They have to wait and thoughtfully and intelligently plan all future steps in the care of the larvae, even when they become more mature.
The first “Olm Feast” took place on the 16th July, on the same day that Marjan Batagelj celebrated the 6th anniversary of being CEO of Postojna Cave and managing the oldest and biggest tourist cave in the world. The Olm Feast was also held in honour of the reopening the Hotel Jama, which opened its doors for the first time on 16th July 1971.
This year the number of visitors of the cave is already heading towards a new record. Why not join them!
