In green, active and healthy Slovenia, love goes first through the stomach, because everywhere you look, something fresh is growing. Chefs are inspired by their love of the local environment and little family secrets that have been passed on for generations. In the summertime, restaurants and chefs are especially busy in the Slovenian coastal region. Here are some ideas for a culinary retreat in Slovenian Istria, prepared for you by Slovenian media network Siol:

Restaurant Sophia in the Kempinski Palace hotel in Portorož offers a combination of local and international cuisine, fresh ingredients, quality service and excellent wine selection.

Hiša Torkla in Korte is located in an old mill for olive oil production. The local dishes are complimented by the local wines and wines from the Primorska wine-growing region.

Gostilna za Gradom (Restaurant behind the Castle) in Koper is known for a quality combination of seafood and culinary innovations.

Baladur Tavern in Šmarje pri Kopru offers classic cuisine: Istrian sausages, prosciutto, local pasta and a warm plate of meat cuts.

At Hotel Marina in Izola, the chef loves to prepare seasonal dishes with seafood. It goes perfectly with a selection from the wine list.

In Piran, restaurant Pri Mari is a meeting point of sea and Slovenian Istria. You can choose from a long list of seafood and Istrian specialties.

Taste Slovenian Istria! Find more ideas for an unforgettable culinary experience here. Hike or bike in the Istrian hinterland and stop by at the local restaurants to taste the best flavours of the Slovenian coastline.
