Cycling connections between the Alps and the Mediterranean

With a newly-marked cycling trail, Slovenia will connect Salzburg in Austria and Grado in Italy. The Slovenian Minister for Infrastructure is already preparing the marking of the 109km cycling trail D2 from Rateče in north-west Slovenia to Ljubljana, the European Green Capital 2016.

In green, active and healthy Slovenia, cycling is one of the most popular activities. The Slovenian Ministry for Infrastructure is working on a project to connect Ljubljana, the European Green Capital 2016, and Rateče, by the Italian border near the famous resort of Kranjska Gora in the Gorenjska region. The connection will run through eleven municipalities of Slovenia and has already been presented to representatives of all the municipalities and the Slovenian cycling network. The project should be implemented by Mobility Week in the middle of September. The marked cycling trail will connect the cities of Salzburg and Grado, therefore the Austrian and Slovenian Alps, with the Slovenian and Italian coasts.

The next step in the Ministry’s project is to conclude the marking of the cycling routes in the Brežice wine hills in south-east Slovenia by the end of this year, and to connect the east of Slovenia – Maribor, the second biggest city – with the coastal town of Koper in the south-west in 2017.
