Slovenia prepares for harvesting

Slovenia has a long tradition as a wine-producing country and the end of August brings the beginning of grape harvesting. Get ready for one of the biggest celebrations of wine in Slovenia in Maribor. Join the winemakers at the Lendava harvest, one of the most famous harvests in Slovenia. Treat yourself to a tasting of the most extraordinary wines in Ljubljana, the European Green Capital 2016, and go on an adventure by train to the winegrowing land of Brda.

Slovenia is home to three wine-growing regions, 14 wine-growing districts and nearly 30,000 registered producers of grapes, almost all of whom are also winemakers. A true small-scale image of wine-making in Europe! This is why the wine tradition has had a special place in people’s hearts for centuries.

Setting up the Klopotec (a wooden wind rattle, used in the vineyards to scare birds away) in front of the Old Vine House in Maribor, the second largest city in Slovenia, announces the beginning of the harvesting season and the traditional wine events in Maribor. The wind rattle in front of the oldest vine in the world is a unique trademark, which stands there until St. Martin’s Day in November.

Among the most famous harvests is the Lendava harvest. Visit the traditional ethnological event in the easternmost part of Slovenia. Take part in the local festivities with traditional customs, a folklore festival and a rich selection of Lendava wines.

In October, Ljubljana, the European Green Capital 2016, will host the international wine festival, TOP VINO. Wine lovers will have the opportunity to taste extraordinary wines from all over the world, among them the Chateau wines from Bordeaux, and attend workshops and lectures.

In November, take a ride on a vintage steam train along the Bohinj Railway that will take you to the wine growing region of Brda, the land of invigorating moments. The journey itself is known as one of the most picturesque train rides in Europe. Combine it with the Brda wine experience and you will have the perfect getaway.
