One Month to Go Until the Biggest Cycling Event in Slovenia’s History

Just one month remains until the 2026 European Road Cycling Championships, which will put Slovenia at the heart of European cycling from 2 to 7 October. Around 800 riders from 51 countries are expected to compete for European titles on Slovenian roads.

The European Championships will be the biggest cycling event ever held in Slovenia and one of the country’s major sporting events of 2026. Over six days of competition, riders will contest road races and individual time trials across junior, U23 and elite categories.

Organisers expect around 800 athletes and 500 team staff and officials, while television coverage on Eurosport and EBU channels is projected to reach an audience of approximately 16.5 million viewers.

The main host locations will be Ljubljana and Šenčur, with race routes extending through a total of 12 municipalities. In addition to Ljubljana and Šenčur, the peloton will pass through Medvode, Kranj, Preddvor, Škofja Loka, Vodice, Komenda, Mengeš, Domžale, Kamnik and Cerklje na Gorenjskem.

One of the highlights will be the men’s elite road race on Sunday, 4 October, starting in Ljubljana at 12:30 and finishing in Šenčur.

A showcase for Slovenia as a cycling destination

Beyond the competition itself, the European Championships will also provide an important platform for promoting Slovenia internationally as an active and sustainable destination.

The Slovenian Tourist Board is supporting the championships through its communication channels and promotional activities in international markets. Its campaign will highlight the 12 participating municipalities, active and sustainable experiences across the country and the I feel Slovenia brand. Promotional I feel Slovenia flags will also be available for spectators along the routes.

With millions of viewers expected across Europe, the championships offer an opportunity to showcase Slovenia not only as the home of some of the world’s leading cyclists, but also as a destination made for cycling and other outdoor experiences.

Cycling has become an increasingly important part of Slovenia’s tourism offer, while the international achievements of Slovenian riders have helped raise the country’s profile among cycling fans worldwide.

Detailed race schedules, route information and further details about the championships are available on the official 2026 European Road Cycling Championships website and on the I feel Slovenia portal.
