Why September Is One of the Best Times to Experience Slovenia’s Coast

Warm sea, pleasantly mild temperatures, quieter beaches and a slower Mediterranean rhythm make September one of the most rewarding months to discover Slovenia’s coast. In Strunjan, where dramatic cliffs, salt pans and the Adriatic meet, the change of season is particularly appealing – especially when combined with wellness, outdoor activities and the restorative benefits of the sea.

While summer may be the traditional choice for a seaside escape, early autumn reveals another side of the Slovenian coast. The busiest holiday period has passed, but the days remain warm and inviting, making September ideal for swimming, walking, cycling and simply enjoying the Mediterranean atmosphere at a more leisurely pace.

One of the places that captures this seasonal appeal particularly well is Talaso Strunjan, set in the heart of Strunjan Landscape Park, among pine trees, salt pans and protected coastal scenery.

Where the sea becomes part of wellbeing

Strunjan has long been known for thalassotherapy – an approach that draws on the beneficial properties of the marine environment.

At Talaso Strunjan, the mild Mediterranean climate, sea aerosols, seawater, sunshine and salt-pan mud form the basis of both wellness and health-related programmes. At Vitarium Spa & Thalasso in Hotel Svoboda, guests can swim in heated seawater pools throughout the year and choose from treatments and programmes focusing on relaxation, stress management and overall wellbeing.

A boutique stay beside the salt pans

For those looking for a quieter and more intimate stay, Laguna Strunjan offers a Mediterranean-style retreat close to the Strunjan salt pans and the Stjuža lagoon.

The boutique hotel combines contemporary comfort with a relaxed atmosphere and is also dog-friendly. Guests can enjoy generous breakfasts, while an outdoor heated pool is available during the warmer part of the year.

Selected wellness rituals complement the stay, with the range of treatments changing along with the seasons.

Early autumn on foot and by bike

Strunjan offers numerous opportunities for hiking, cycling, Nordic walking and leisurely coastal walks. Trails lead past the salt pans, through Mediterranean vegetation and towards viewpoints above the cliffs, opening up panoramic views over the Adriatic. With fewer visitors and milder temperatures than in high summer, it is an excellent time to experience the landscape at a slower pace.

Mediterranean flavours with a sea view

The experience continues at the table. The seaside Pinija Restaurant serves Mediterranean dishes, fresh fish and seafood, alongside authentic Neapolitan-style pizzas. Nearby, the renovated Cavedin beach bar offers snacks, cocktails, refreshing drinks and ice cream with views of the sea.

Slovenia’s coast beyond the summer season

In September, these simple seaside pleasures take on a different character – long lunches, walks by the water and sunset drinks becoming part of an unhurried coastal escape. For travellers looking to extend the feeling of summer while already embracing the first signs of autumn, Strunjan may be one of the best places to do just that: much of the warmth of summer, with more space, more tranquillity and a distinctly slower pace.

As part of this esteemed association, Talaso Strunjan joins forces with eleven other top Slovenian spas, united in their dedication to harnessing natural therapeutic elements like thermal waters, mineral waters, seawater, salt-pan mud and more.
