International Museum Day Brings Inspiring Cultural Experiences Across Slovenia

First established by the International Council of Museums in 1977, International Museum Day continues to spotlight the importance of museums in safeguarding heritage, connecting communities, and encouraging cultural exchange. The 2026 theme places particular emphasis on museums as places of inclusion and cooperation in an increasingly divided world.

As 18 May falls on a Monday this year, when many museums are traditionally closed, numerous events and activities throughout Slovenia will already take place over the weekend, on 16 and 17 May 2026.

In the Drava Plain region, visitors will be invited to discover local heritage and authentic rural experiences. At Rače Castle, guided tours of the Gril Ethnological Collection will offer insight into traditional life and customs, while the Pal Farm in Zlatoličje will present its collection of vintage vehicles alongside local culinary specialities and homemade products. Nearby, the Golob tourist farm will open its doors for guided farm visits and tastings of traditional cured meat delicacies.

A particularly atmospheric lineup is being prepared at Žiče Charterhouse, one of Slovenia’s most important monastic landmarks. On 18 May, visitors will be able to enjoy free guided tours of the former Carthusian monastery, presentations of Carthusian life, creative workshops for children, and visits to permanent exhibitions and the herb garden. Guests will also have the opportunity to visit Gastuž, believed to be the oldest continuously operating inn in Slovenia.

The National Museum of Slovenia will celebrate the occasion with free admission and a diverse programme across its Museum Street and Metelkova locations. The focus will be on strengthening the connection between museums and the public while presenting cultural heritage through contemporary and engaging interpretations.

At the Slovenian School Museum, visitors will be able to explore the interactive exhibition “School Rules!” as well as a temporary exhibition dedicated to sports heritage. One of the highlights will be the historic classroom experience “Sunday School,” which transports participants back to the school year 1865 and offers a glimpse into life in the classroom more than 160 years ago.

The Maribor Regional Museum will host an open day with free admission to its permanent and temporary exhibitions. The programme will culminate in “Baroque Celebration,” a visual and musical experience combining fashion, music, and historical ambience in the knight’s hall of Maribor Castle.

Meanwhile, the Slovenian Ethnographic Museum will mark International Museum Day on Sunday, 17 May 2026. This year’s theme aligns closely with the museum’s mission of fostering dialogue, accessibility, and cultural understanding. 2026 also marks the 80th anniversary of the International Council of Museums, further underlining the importance of international cooperation and the social role museums play today.
