Bled Unveils New Tourism Development Strategy Through 2045: Quality of Life and Sustainable Development at the Forefront

Bled Unveils New Tourism Development Strategy Through 2045: Quality of Life and Sustainable Development at the Forefront

At the 2026 Bled Tourism Forum, Bled presented the Bled Tourism Development Strategy 2026–2045, a long-term vision steering the destination toward sustainable, high-quality, and regenerative tourism development.

The strategy places strong emphasis on longer stays, higher added value in tourism, reducing pressure on the environment, and improving the quality of life for local residents. Special attention is also given to the legacy of Arnold Rikli, visitor flow management, and strengthening connections between Bled and the wider Julian Alps region. Participants at the forum were also addressed by MSc. Maja Pak Olaj, Director of the Slovenian Tourist Board, who highlighted sustainability, well-being, and high-quality experiences as key directions for the future of Slovenian tourism.

The new strategy, prepared for Bled Tourism by Turistica, the Faculty of Tourism Studies at the University of Primorska, defines the destination’s development path for the next twenty years. It is based on the understanding that the future of Bled can no longer rely primarily on increasing visitor numbers, but rather on creating greater value for the destination, residents, and guests alike. The document therefore shifts the destination from a “must-see” to a “must-experience” model, focusing on longer and higher-quality stays, visitor flow management, and reducing pressure on the most burdened areas.

At the heart of the strategy is the development of Bled as an Alpine centre of holistic regeneration, rooted in its natural assets, water, tranquillity, movement, high-quality gastronomy, cultural identity, and the legacy of Arnold Rikli. The strategy emphasizes that every future investment, tourism product, or event should contribute to extending visitors’ stays, enhancing the quality of the tourism experience, and fostering better coexistence between tourism and the local environment.

“Bled holds a special place in Slovenian tourism. It is one of our tourism icons, often the first point of contact international visitors have with Slovenia, and a destination that significantly shapes the image of our country abroad. This is precisely why it is essential that its future development continues to be thoughtful, long-term, and guided by a clear vision of quality. Bled has excellent foundations for future development – a strong brand, exceptional natural and cultural heritage, high-quality providers, and an authentic story that aligns perfectly with global tourism trends. The legacy of Arnold Rikli, the natural environment, active outdoor living, regeneration, and a strong sense of place together create an offer that appeals to today’s visitors seeking health, balance, and meaningful experiences. Health and well-being will also be among the key themes of the Slovenian Tourist Board’s promotional activities in the coming years, and we see great potential in Bled and the wider Julian Alps area for the development of modern, sustainable, and regenerative tourism products,” emphasized MSc. Maja Pak Olaj.

Among the key challenges are traffic congestion, pressure on the lake area, short average lengths of stay, and the impact of tourist rentals on the housing market. Particular importance is also placed on residents’ quality of life, which is positioned as one of the destination’s core indicators of success.

The document outlines ten development goals through 2045, including reducing pressure from day visitors, extending guest stays, developing high-quality boutique experiences, improving working conditions in tourism, and strengthening cooperation among stakeholders.

An important part of the strategy is also the stronger integration of Bled with the wider Julian Alps region. In the future, Bled is expected to use its international recognition even more strategically to help disperse visitor flows and support the development of the broader Alpine area together with Bohinj, Radovljica, Kranjska Gora, and the Soča Valley.

The strategy presentation was followed by a roundtable discussion on the future development of Bled, where participants stressed that the strategy must not remain merely a document, but become a shared practice embraced by the entire destination. Successful implementation will depend on cooperation among all stakeholders, clear governance, data-driven decision-making, and the long-term alignment of tourism development with the needs of the local community.
