A new cultural attraction combining medieval history, digital storytelling and panoramic views above the Soča Valley has officially opened in Tolmin. The new interpretation centre at Kozlov Rob Castle transforms the ruins of one of the region’s most important medieval castles into an exciting visitor experience that blends heritage, technology and nature.

Perched on the hill of Kozlov rob overlooking Tolmin, the new centre is housed inside the restored north-western tower of the castle ruins. Developed over seven years with municipal and European funding, the project is valued at approximately EUR 3 million and represents a major new addition to the cultural tourism offer of the destination.

Managed by the Tolmin Museum in cooperation with the Municipality of Tolmin and the Soča Valley Tourism, the centre offers visitors a contemporary insight into the story of the 11th-century castle and its strategic importance throughout history.

Among the highlights are an interactive exhibition featuring a detailed 3D reconstruction of the former castle, an immersive multimedia room, multilingual audio guides, and gamified experiences designed to engage visitors of all generations. Combining classical museum interpretation with advanced digital tools, the centre invites visitors on a “journey through time” above one of Slovenia’s most scenic alpine valleys.

The redevelopment also included improved access infrastructure, including a new access road and utility connections, making the site significantly more accessible, including for visitors with reduced mobility.

At the same time, archaeological and historical research carried out during the restoration revealed important new findings about the castle complex, including evidence suggesting that the medieval castle was once even larger than the castle of Gorizia.

The opening marks an important step in the development of a broader cultural tourism product in Tolmin, connecting Kozlov Rob Castle, the Coronini Manor, the Na Doru area and the nearby Tolmin Gorges — one of the most visited natural attractions in the region.

By combining heritage preservation, innovation and sustainable tourism development, the new interpretation centre offers visitors a fresh way to discover the stories hidden above the Soča Valley.
