Design Icon K67 Kiosk Finds New Life in Maribor as Cultural and Tourist Attraction

One of the most recognizable icons of Slovenian and former Yugoslav industrial design is set to gain a new role in Maribor. A renovated K67 Kiosk will soon open in front of the Maribor Art Gallery, transforming a legendary design object into a new cultural and tourist meeting point.

The project was selected through the city’s participatory budgeting initiative, making it a notable example of how local communities are helping shape public urban spaces and preserve design heritage.

Designed in the late 1960s by acclaimed architect and designer Saša J. Mächtig — recipient of Slovenia’s highest cultural honour, the Prešeren Award for Lifetime Achievement — the modular K67 kiosk became an internationally recognized symbol of innovative industrial design. Over the decades, it has appeared in cities across Europe and beyond, while also securing its place in the collections of major international institutions, including Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.

The Maribor restoration project also carries a strong educational dimension. The kiosk was renovated by students of the Technical School Centre Maribor under the guidance of their teachers, connecting heritage preservation with practical design and craftsmanship training.

The initiative emerged from a desire to increase awareness of Slovenia’s internationally acclaimed design legacy and integrate it into contemporary urban life.

More than just a restored design object, the renewed kiosk will serve as a flexible cultural venue hosting pop-up exhibitions by Slovenian designers, presentations by creatives and a variety of public events. Organizers hope it will become both a lively gathering point and a frequently photographed landmark that adds a fresh layer to Maribor’s cultural tourism offer.

The official opening is scheduled for May 9, while a public lecture by Saša J. Mächtig will take place one day earlier at the Maribor Art Gallery. The programme will continue with events connecting design, culture and community life, contributing to the revitalization of the city centre.
