Slovenia Highlights Sustainable Cuisine on Food Waste Prevention Day

Slovenia Highlights Sustainable Cuisine on Food Waste Prevention Day

On 24 April, Slovenia marks the national Food Waste Prevention Day – an opportunity to spotlight long-standing efforts in responsible consumption and sustainable gastronomy.

At a time when reducing food waste is a global priority, Slovenia offers a credible and tangible model –  where sustainability is not an added value, but a foundation. Across the country, reducing food waste and limiting environmentally harmful materials – particularly single-use plastics – has become an integral part of how gastronomy is conceived and experienced.

Restaurants are increasingly adopting zero-waste principles, rethinking menus, portioning, and sourcing to ensure that ingredients are used thoughtfully and efficiently.

This commitment is also formalised through the Slovenia Green Cuisine label, awarded to restaurants that meet strict sustainability criteria – from responsible sourcing and seasonal menus to waste reduction and energy efficiency. The label provides visitors with a clear signpost of where sustainability is embedded into the culinary experience.

You are invited to read stories that bring sustainable practices in Slovenian gastronomy into the forefront and explore how Slovenia continues to turn it into a defining part of its international identity.
