EU’s Entry/Exit System Fully Operational Across Schengen Borders

As of 10 April 2026, the European Union’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) is fully operational at all external borders of the Schengen Area, marking a significant step towards more efficient and secure travel procedures.

The EES introduces the automated registration of third-country nationals entering and exiting the Schengen zone, replacing traditional passport stamping. Instead, travellers’ entry and exit data – including biometric identifiers such as facial images and fingerprints – are recorded digitally, streamlining border crossings while enhancing security.

Slovenia has already implemented the system at key external border points, including three international airports and two maritime crossings, ensuring alignment with the broader European rollout.

Faster, Safer and More Transparent Travel

By enabling automated data collection and storage, the EES allows for quicker subsequent border crossings and improved monitoring of short-stay limits within the Schengen Area. The system applies to non-EU nationals travelling for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

Supporting the Travel Trade

With the system now mandatory, travel and tourism stakeholders play a key role in informing passengers about the new procedures. Updated communication materials – including videos, infographics, and traveller leaflets – are available to support clear and consistent messaging.

Industry partners are encouraged to proactively share information through their websites, booking communications, and on-site materials, helping travellers prepare in advance and ensuring a smooth travel experience.
