Ajdovščina Brings Roman Heritage to Life with New Tourism Experience

Ajdovščina is set to enrich its tourism offer with a new experience that brings its Roman past to life. Launching after Easter, the new product Secrets of the Roman Fortress Castra invites visitors to explore the remains of one of the best-preserved Roman camps in Slovenia – either independently or as part of a guided tour.

Located in the heart of the town, the remains of the ancient Roman fortress Castra are still visible today, offering a unique insight into Ajdovščina’s historical significance. The new experience provides a structured and engaging way to discover this heritage, combining interpretation, storytelling, and interactive elements.

Visitors can choose between self-guided exploration or guided tours, which will take place every Wednesday and Sunday at 10 a.m. The guided experience lasts approximately two hours and is available for groups of at least three participants.

The experience highlights key features of the former Roman stronghold, including defensive walls, towers, thermal baths, and remnants of underfloor heating systems. It is enriched with visual aids, spatial interpretation, and local stories and legends that have been preserved through generations. Special attention is also given to families and younger visitors, making Roman history accessible and engaging for a wider audience.

The product has been developed by the Nova Gorica and Vipava Valley Tourism Board, which emphasises the importance of such content in enhancing the destination’s appeal. Events and interpretive experiences are seen as key drivers in increasing visibility and attracting visitors to the region.

With this new Roman-themed experience, Ajdovščina further strengthens its position as a destination where history is not only preserved, but actively brought to life –offering visitors a distinctive blend of heritage, storytelling, and contemporary tourism approaches.
