A Literary Stroll Through Novo mesto: In the Footsteps of Dragotin Kette

Marking the 150th anniversary of Dragotin Kette, Novo mesto invites visitors to step into the poetic world that shaped his timeless verses. This literary stroll reveals the places, emotions, and inspirations behind some of Slovenia’s most cherished poetry.

In 2026, Slovenia marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Dragotin Kette, one of the most prominent voices of Slovenian literary modernism. Though his life was tragically short – he passed away at just 23 – his deeply emotional poetry and vivid impressions left an enduring mark, closely intertwined with the atmosphere of Novo mesto.

Kette spent only two years in Novo mesto while attending the final years of grammar school, yet the town became a lasting source of inspiration. Here, he penned some of his most celebrated love poems, capturing the quiet rhythm of the town, the mist rising above the Krka River, and the subtle melancholy of its streets.

Today, the city pays tribute to the poet through a thoughtfully curated walking experience that invites visitors to explore Novo mesto through his eyes.

At the heart of the journey lies the Main Square (Glavni trg) – a unique, funnel-shaped medieval square lined with elegant arcades and considered one of the most beautiful in Central Europe. The Town Hall, with its Venetian character, stands proudly at the top, accompanied by statues of notable locals, including a bust of Kette himself. Nearby, the Kette Fountain features engraved verses from his poem Na trgu.

The experience also engages the senses in unexpected ways. As a tribute to the poet, a Kette cake – blending white chocolate, cream, vanilla, and peach – has been created and can be enjoyed at a local inn on the square, celebrating the idea that love, much like poetry, finds its way through taste.

Flowing gently around the town’s characteristic meander, the Krka River provided Kette with a constant source of inspiration. Its green hues and tranquil movement echo the introspective tone of his poetry. Visitors are encouraged to pause on the Kandija Bridge, where the interplay of reflections and mist still evokes the same poetic atmosphere.

Kette’s personal story is also deeply embedded in Novo mesto. During his time here, he fell in love with a young local girl, Angela Smola. His unrequited love gave rise to some of the most profound works in Slovenian lyric poetry, including cycles such as Slovo, Tihe noči and Spomini. The setting of this story leads visitors to Kapitelj, the hilltop cathedral of St. Nicholas, where Kette’s emotions took shape. From the bell tower terrace, sweeping views over the town and river reveal landscapes that inspired his verses.

For those seeking a deeper cultural context, the Dolenjska Museum and the Jakčev dom Gallery house the most famous portrait of Kette, painted by Ivan Vavpotič, offering further insight into the poet’s life and legacy.

Finally, nature and poetry converge along Kette’s Avenue, the longest tree-lined avenue in Slovenia. This peaceful promenade follows the Krka River and connects to the town centre, inviting visitors to walk beneath chestnut canopies and experience the same contemplative stillness that once inspired Kette. Along the way, a memorial plaque marks the house where he once lived.

This literary journey through Novo mesto is more than a walk – it is an intimate encounter with a poet whose words continue to resonate through the town’s streets, landscapes, and quiet corners.
