Castles of Posavje: A New Festival Brings Slovenia’s Historic Strongholds to Life

Castles of Posavje: A New Festival Brings Slovenia’s Historic Strongholds to Life

This April, Slovenia’s Posavje region unveils a new cultural tourism experience that reimagines its rich heritage for contemporary travellers. From 10 to 17 April 2026, the first Castles of Posavje Festival will transform eight historic sites into vibrant stages for culture, gastronomy and immersive storytelling.

Rather than presenting castles as static monuments, the Castles of Posavje Festival invites visitors to experience them as living spaces – places where history meets creativity and tradition unfolds through carefully curated, modern experiences.

Set across a constellation of remarkable locations – including Brežice Castle, Rajhenburg Castle, Sevnica Castle and the Božidar Jakac Gallery – the festival connects the region through a shared story shaped by heritage, landscape and local identity

Each day brings a different perspective: from concerts and theatre performances staged within historic walls to expert-led tours revealing hidden stories, alongside culinary events that interpret local flavours in contemporary ways. Family-friendly experiences further open these spaces to a wider audience, making the experience both accessible and multi-layered.

The festival was officially presented at a press conference held on 31 March 2026 at the Tourist Information Centre of Terme Čatež.

At its core, the festival builds on a long-standing partnership among the Castles of Posavje, a partnership active since 2014. Over the years, this collective has developed joint experiences such as the “Castle Package” and received the Jakob Award for innovation – laying the foundation for a more connected and recognisable destination.

Now, with its first unified festival, the region takes a step further – positioning Posavje as a compelling cultural destination where heritage is not only preserved, but actively lived and reinterpreted.

The festival also marks a shift towards greater international visibility, with promotion extending beyond Slovenia’s borders for the first time. Yet its strength remains rooted in local partnership, authenticity and a deep respect for place.

For visitors, the result is an exciting journey through castles that are no longer just landmarks, but gateways into Slovenia’s cultural landscape – inviting exploration, connection and discovery at every turn.
