Slovenia’s Top Skier Ilka Štuhec Retires

Slovenian alpine skier Ilka Štuhec, who was in the past also the ambassador of Slovenian tourism, has concluded her remarkable sporting career, leaving a strong mark on both the world of skiing and Slovenian sport.

Born in Slovenj Gradec, Štuhec began her journey on the slopes of her home country, rising to the very top of the global alpine skiing elite. Her achievements place her among the most successful Slovenian alpine skiers of all time, with her performances defined by speed, courage and technical excellence.

Her career is also a story of resilience. Following serious injuries and long rehabilitation periods, she repeatedly returned to the top level of international competition, demonstrating exceptional determination, positive energy and dedication to her sport. Beyond her sporting success, she has made a significant contribution to Slovenia’s international recognition. As an ambassador of Slovenian tourism, she has helped promote the country as a destination for active experiences, top-level sport and close contact with nature.

For many years, the Slovenian Tourist Board has strategically connected elite athletes with the promotion of Slovenia. Internationally renowned Slovenian athletes such as Tadej Pogačar, Primož Roglič, Janja Garnbret, Tina Maze, Luka Dončić and Ilka Štuhec have, as ambassadors of Slovenian tourism, played an important role in strengthening Slovenia’s global visibility as a green, active and inspiring destination.

With the conclusion of her career, Ilka Štuhec remains one of Slovenia’s greatest sporting icons – a symbol of determination, courage and inspiration that will continue to resonate both at home and internationally. At the Slovenian Tourist Board, we are proud to have worked with her as an ambassador of Slovenian tourism. We invite you to listen to Feel Slovenia the podcast, where Noah Charney speaks with her about her career, her hometown of Maribor, and even what to eat before a World Cup race and how a competition day unfolds.
