Pohorje – Kozjak Trail: A New 174-Kilometre Hiking Route

Pohorje – Kozjak Trail: A New 174-Kilometre Hiking Route

The Pohorje – Kozjak Trail is a 174-kilometre circular route divided into 20 stages, linking the Pohorje and Kozjak mountain ranges. The trail has already gained international recognition, with the BBC naming it among the five most anticipated new hiking trails in the world this year.

Across Slovenia and beyond, many ski resorts are evolving into year-round outdoor resorts in response to climate change and the rising demand for outdoor activities. Pohorje is following this trend, with both major resorts and smaller providers developing new experiences that enrich the offer throughout the seasons.

A Trail Connecting Nature, People and Experiences

Designed in line with leading European long-distance trails, the Pohorje – Kozjak Trail is divided into 20 stages – ten across Pohorje and ten across Kozjak – and largely follows existing marked hiking routes, upgraded and unified in cooperation with local mountaineering associations.

Stages begin and end at accessible locations such as towns, tourist info points and mountain huts, many of which are reachable by public transport from Maribor, Zreče, Ruše and Radlje ob Dravi. While classified as a demanding multi-day trail due to its length and elevation gain, it is not technically difficult, making it suitable for both experienced hikers and those exploring shorter sections.

Developing a Product That Grows with the Destination

The trail is conceived as a long-term development project, to be gradually upgraded into a high-quality, sustainable, and internationally recognised hiking product. A key focus is on captivating experiences of nature, cultural heritage and scenic viewpoints. More than 100 points of interest have been identified along the route, from pristine Pohorje forests and panoramic views to cultural landmarks and vistas over the Drava River valley.

The trail invites hikers to slow down, reconnect with nature, and – true to the Pohorje slogan – simply free their minds. At the same time, it fosters collaboration among local providers, from mountain huts and tourist farms to accommodation and gastronomy, supporting the development of multi-day hiking experiences.

Opening in June in Maribor

The official opening is planned for June in Maribor, on the location of the starting point of the Slovenian Mountain Trail. Route descriptions are already available on the Pohorje Slovenia destination portal, with international outdoor platforms to follow later this year.
