Koroška Joins the International Meridiem Trail Cycling Route

The Slovenian region of Koroška (Carinthia) and the Municipality of Radlje ob Dravi have joined the international Meridiem Trail project, a cross-border initiative connecting Austria, Slovenia and Hungary. The newly established 600-kilometre Vienna–Villach cycling route, officially opened on 1 March 2026, runs partly through Koroška (Carinthia), strengthening sustainable cycling tourism and deepening cooperation between destinations across Central Europe.

The new cycling route and tourism product were presented by project partners at a press conference in Vienna. Representatives of the Koroška Regional Development Agency (RRA Koroška) and the Municipality of Radlje ob Dravi, together with the Radlje ob Dravi Development and Social Agency, also took part in the presentation. By joining the initiative, Koroška becomes part of an important international tourism product that brings new opportunities for destination development and greater international visibility.

The 600-kilometre Meridiem Trail connects Vienna and Villach and passes through five Austrian federal states as well as the Hungarian towns of Sopron and Kőszeg. In Slovenia, the route enters at Radlje ob Dravi via the Radlje Pass, where it joins the Drava Cycling Route. From there it continues past Muta to Dravograd before returning to Austria at Lavamünd in Austrian Carinthia.

The Meridiem Trail includes approximately 4,400 metres of elevation gain when cycling from Vienna to Villach and around 4,100 metres in the opposite direction. The route follows existing cycling paths and routes and is supported by a GPS-based digital guide and mobile application. Through the Ride with GPS platform, cyclists can access information about destinations along the trail, including accommodation, restaurants, experiences, excursion points and mobility options.

More than just a cycling route, the Meridiem Trail represents a shared European tourism story built on cross-border cooperation, sustainable mobility and the growing popularity of cycling tourism. With cycling travel continuing to expand rapidly across Europe, the new route opens fresh opportunities for destinations along the trail. In Koroška (Carinthia), the expectation is that the Meridiem Trail will attract many domestic and international cyclists eager to explore the region’s landscapes, natural attractions and tourism experiences.
