Three Slovenian Stories Honoured at the Green Destinations Story Awards 2026

Slovenia has once again reaffirmed its leading role on the international stage of sustainable tourism. At the prestigious Green Destinations Story Awards 2026 ceremony, held last night as part of the world’s leading travel trade show ITB Berlin, three sustainable stories from Slovenian destinations – Bela krajina, Bohinj, and Bled – received awards. During the ceremony, it was also announced that the global Green Destinations conference will take place in Kranj this October.

The Green Destinations Story Awards highlight the most inspiring and innovative practices in sustainable destination development from around the world. Among this year’s award recipients are Slovenian projects that demonstrate how sustainability in Slovenia is not merely a strategy, but a way of thinking, collaborating, and shaping the future.

Award-Winning Projects from Slovenia

Bela krajina – Zero Waste to Victory: Running Towards a Waste-Free Future

Third place: Environment & Climate category

The Lahinja Trail run, organised by Lahinja Landscape Park under the auspices of the RIC Bela krajina institute, is held under a strong zero waste commitment. Through a series of improvements, the organisers have achieved more than 90 percent separately collected waste while also reducing the overall amount of waste by at least 30 percent. By scheduling the event in November, the race also contributes to extending the tourist season.

Bohinj – From Fields to Forks: 100% Local

Third place: Thriving Communities category

This project connects local producers, restaurants and consumers while strengthening local food self-sufficiency and improving access to locally produced ingredients. In doing so, it contributes to preserving rural areas, reducing the carbon footprint, and strengthening the local economy. By supporting local agriculture, Bohinj reinforces its sustainability efforts, preserves cultural heritage, and enriches the visitor experience.

Bled – Beyond the Postcard: A Multimedia Exploration of Authentic Experiences

Third place: Business & Marketing category

This multimedia project by Bled Tourism – including the film Adventure of a Lifetime, The Bled Podcast, and the Bledology book – encourages visitors to experience the destination more deeply, explore lesser-known paths, and extend their stay. The initiative actively supports the destination’s sustainability strategy while also engaging the local community.

Kranj to Host the Global Green Destinations Conference

Complementing the achievements of Slovenian destinations, the city of Kranj – holder of the prestigious Slovenia Green Platinum label – will host the global Green Destinations conference this October at Brdo pri Kranju.

Upon the announcement, the Mayor of the City Municipality of Kranj, Matjaž Rakovec, emphasised that hosting the international Green Destinations conference represents an important recognition of Kranj’s long-term commitment to sustainable tourism. At the same time, it offers an opportunity to further strengthen the city’s international visibility, as highlighted in a statement shared on social media.

Slovenia as a Model of Sustainable Tourism

All these recognitions confirm the successful strategic direction of Slovenian tourism towards a green, boutique, and responsible future. Success at the Green Destinations Story Awards 2026 represents not only recognition for individual projects but also acknowledgement of a broader vision that connects local communities, tourism businesses, and visitors in a shared goal – creating sustainable stories with long-term impact.

The nominees for the awards were selected from the Top 100 Green Destinations Stories of 2025, among which as many as eight came from Slovenia.
