Alpe-Adria-Trail: Continuation of Successful Trilateral Cooperation

In 2012, the Alpe-Adria-Trail was presented for the first time at the ITB Berlin. This year, the partner organisations Carinthian Tourism Board, Slovenian Tourist Board and PromoTurismoFVG (Friuli Venezia Giulia Tourism Board) once again used this event to extend their successful cooperation for another three years and to further develop the long-distance hiking trail, which is now considered a "classic", and establish it in new markets.

After the coronavirus-related slump in international visitor numbers, these have risen again in the past two years. Hiking enthusiasts from over 30 countries were registered on the 750 km long-distance hiking trail. The increase in visitors from the USA in particular was taken as an opportunity to collaborate even more intensively with well-known hiking platforms on online content and to further raise awareness of the trail.

The newly designed Alpe-Adria-Trail video serves as the central medium for communication. It presents the trail as a cross-border nature and cultural experience and focuses on its unique identity – three countries, three cultures and an extraordinary diversity of landscape, nature and cuisine.

The new cooperation agreement was signed by the respective managing directors of the participating organizations at ITB Berlin on Tuesday, March 3. This ensures the continued joint implementation, promotion and financing of the Alpe-Adria Trail until 2028.

MSc. Maja Pak Olaj, Slovenian Tourist Board: “We are proud to continue our strong cross-border cooperation with our partners in Austrian Carinthia and Friuli-Venezia Giulia. The Alpe-Adria-Trail is a unique product of a region where the Alps meet the Mediterranean. Stretching from the majestic Grossglockner to the shores of the Adriatic Sea, the trail symbolically and experientially connects three cultures, three languages and three landscapes into one compelling story. The Alpe-Adria-Trail fully reflects the values of Slovenian tourism: immersive outdoor experiences, close contact with local culture and responsible development. By extending our partnership, we are strengthening our joint commitment to positioning the trail among Europe’s leading cross-border hiking experiences and inspiring travellers who value nature, authenticity, quality and sustainable travel.”

Sergio Emidio Bini, Regional Councillor for Tourism of Friuli Venezia Giulia: “The collaboration between Friuli Venezia Giulia, Carinthia and Slovenia grows stronger year after year, with the aim of promoting slow, sustainable and experiential tourism in order to attract increasingly larger market segments. A well-established friendship and fruitful cooperation that has lasted for years and sees us united in important joint projects such as the Alpe-Adria-Trail, which since 2012 has enabled us to bring together expertise and resources to enhance even the lesser-known areas of our territories. Today, this partnership is being renewed, aiming for higher goals and ambitions, while seeking new tourism partners also from promising overseas markets such as Canada and the United States.”

Klaus Ehrenbrandtner, Carinthian Tourism Board: „The Alpe-Adria-Trail will enter its 15th season in 2026 and is a key initiative in Carinthian hiking tourism. As an international visitor magnet, it makes an important contribution to positioning Carinthia as a year-round destination. It combines the scenic advantages of the southern side of the Alps with the regional characteristics of three countries and at the same time stands for exemplary cross-border cooperation between the partner organisations – a key success factor for this product.“
