Winter Season Shows Positive Trends

Slovenia’s ski resorts are enjoying a promising winter season, currently recording around five percent more skiers than at the same time last year. Recent snowfall further boosts optimism, although the continuation of positive trends will largely depend on weather conditions.

Thanks to favourable conditions for artificial snowmaking, several resorts opened as early as late November. By the end of January, nearly 658,000 skiers had been transported. Mariborsko Pohorje stands out with a remarkable 45 percent increase, welcoming 85,000 skiers in January alone. Kranjska Gora recorded 80,000 visitors, while Rogla reached 74,000.

At a press conference in Kranjska Gora, Ernest Kovač, Secretary of the Association of Slovenian Cableway Operators, emphasised that Slovenian ski resorts rank among the safest in Europe and are particularly well suited to families, beginners and intermediate skiers. Modern lift infrastructure, well-groomed slopes and lift tickets that are on average nearly 30 percent more affordable compared to many foreign resorts remain key advantages.

The long-term focus, however, lies in transforming ski resorts into year-round mountain resorts. Of Slovenia’s 60 to 70 registered ski areas, around 20 are larger and many now operate throughout the year to ensure sustainability and stable employment. Last summer, 13 resorts operated, transporting around 650,000 visitors, while winter numbers reached 1.25 million. Further investments – especially in snowmaking infrastructure – will remain essential for future competitiveness.
