New in Kamnik: A Unique Overnight Retreat in a Monastery

Mekinje Monastery introduces a distinctive new hospitality concept – an overnight stay designed as a retreat into silence, simplicity and the lived culture of the mid-20th century. Conceived for individuals and couples seeking distance from the pressures of modern life, constant connectivity and digital noise, the programme offers a rare opportunity to slow down and reconnect – with oneself, with heritage and with nature.

Guests stay in carefully renovated monastic rooms furnished with restored pieces from the former Kamnik monastery. The interiors echo the restrained elegance of the 1950s: modest, thoughtfully composed spaces without excess. The atmosphere invites a different experience of time – one that encourages reflection, presence and a gentler daily rhythm.

A stay at Mekinje Monastery adds a unique dimension to Slovenia’s tourism offer. This architectural and cultural landmark, with its dignified presence and contemplative ambience, creates a setting where tradition and contemporary sensibility meet. Located just outside Kamnik, surrounded by greenery and overlooking the Kamnik–Savinja Alps, the monastery combines tranquillity with access to a wealth of outdoor activities in the surrounding landscape.

An essential part of the experience is discovering the monastery’s history and the lives of the Ursuline and Poor Clare sisters. Visitors can explore exhibitions, join guided tours of the monastery and chapel and discover herbal products from the monastery garden. Mornings begin with a simple herbal breakfast, rooted in seasonal ingredients and honest, unpretentious flavours.

Additional experiences can be arranged in advance, including herbal and culinary workshops, orchard visits, guided tours of hidden monastery corners and the chapel, as well as experiences dedicated to calming body and mind – from yoga and meditation to sound and mindfulness workshops. Culinary content inspired by monastic traditions and themed herbal weekends further enrich the stay.

Overnight rates start at €70 per person. The experiences are designed to complement the region’s cultural and natural attractions while offering insight into alternative ways of living and the enduring legacy of monastic heritage.

Alongside individual stays, curated multi-day packages are available – from experiences celebrating traditions beneath the Kamnik mountains to family retreats on the outskirts of Kamnik and tailored monastic packages for seniors.
