Štajerska Named Among Europe’s Best Destinations for 2026

Štajerska has earned a place among European Best Destinations 2026, putting this wine-rich region of north-eastern Slovenia in the international spotlight. The recognition highlights destinations that stand out for their appeal, quality and distinctive travel experiences.

Štajerska, a diverse region in north-eastern Slovenia known for its historic towns, vineyard-covered hills, thermal springs and outdoor experiences, has been recognised by European Best Destinations (EBD) for 2026. The recognition adds to the region’s growing international profile and highlights its combination of culture, nature, gastronomy and sustainable tourism.

The destination brings together seven distinct areas – Maribor, Ptuj, Jeruzalem Slovenija, Haloze, Slovenske gorice, Ravno polje and Pohorje – all located within relatively short distances of one another. This makes it possible for visitors to combine city breaks, wine experiences, cultural heritage and outdoor activities in a single trip.

Among the region’s best-known highlights is Maribor, Slovenia’s second-largest city and home to the world’s oldest vine. Nearby Ptuj, considered Slovenia’s oldest town, is known for its medieval castle, historic centre and centuries-old traditions, including the famous Kurent carnival figures.

Beyond its urban centres, Štajerska is characterised by rolling wine country, rural landscapes and the forests of Pohorje. The region also offers hiking and cycling, thermal spa experiences and a strong culinary and wine tradition.

The latest recognition follows several international accolades for destinations within the region. Maribor was previously ranked among the Top 3 Best European Destinations in 2023 and recognised as Europe’s Best Culinary Destination, while Ptuj was named Best Cultural Heritage Town in Europe 2026 by European Best Destinations.

European Best Destinations (EBD) is a Brussels-based travel platform that has been ranking and promoting destinations across Europe since 2009. Its annual selections are shaped by international traveller voting and highlight destinations considered particularly attractive for European travel. In 2026, the main European Best Destinations ranking featured 20 destinations selected from more than 400 contenders, giving recognised places significant international visibility among travellers and travel media.
