35th Living Nativity in Postojna Cave Brings the Christmas Story to Life Once Again

35th Living Nativity in Postojna Cave Brings the Christmas Story to Life Once Again

On Thursday, 18 December, Postojna Cave hosted the premiere of the 35th Living Nativity, accompanied by a press conference, marking the official opening of the festive season. Each December, the cave is transformed into the world’s largest underground stage, where the Christmas story unfolds in a truly unique setting.

Each year, deep beneath the Karst surface, the biblical story of the birth of Jesus comes to life in the majestic chambers of Postojna Cave. The Living Nativity is not a conventional performance, but a holistic experience in which natural heritage, festive symbolism and human storytelling merge into a truly unique event.

Visitors move through the cave along the tourist route, experiencing individual scenes directly within the natural environment. Soft lighting reveals millions-of-years-old stalactite formations, while scenes featuring Mary, Joseph, shepherds, angels and the Three Kings unfold organically within the space.

Nearly Four Decades of a Shared Story

A special value of the event lies in the involvement of local residents, who have been co-creating the Living Nativity for nearly four decades. As Marjan Batagelj, Chairman of the Management Board of Postojna Cave, emphasises, this is not merely an event hosted by Postojna, but one that is truly lived by the people of the area.

The Living Nativity is considered one of Slovenia’s most recognisable festive events, demonstrating that the Christmas story can come to life even deep underground, where darkness makes the power of light all the more striking.

A 90-Minute Fairytale Experience

The approximately 90-minute experience unfolds along a five-kilometre route and includes a ride on the cave train as well as a walk through the most beautiful sections of Postojna Cave. In this jubilee, 35th edition, more than 100 performers bring 18 biblical scenes to life.

Performances take place daily from 25 to 30 December, starting at 13:30.

Advance booking is recommended.
