Reviving Industrial Heritage: The Old Steelworks in Ravne na Koroškem Reopens Its Doors

In the heart of Slovenia’s Koroška region, the Old Steelworks in Ravne na Koroškem has been given a new life. Once the industrial core of the town, it now stands as a symbol of renewal – honouring the region’s steelmaking legacy while opening its doors to culture, creativity and community.

The historic Old Steelworks (Stara železarna) in Ravne na Koroškem has entered a new era with the opening of its first renovated section, following a 1.6-million-euro restoration. The renewed complex now includes the former production hall (štauharija), the laboratory and their surroundings, transformed into an inspiring museum space that blends industrial heritage with contemporary interpretation.

The exhibition panels feature black-and-white images of workers, laboratories, and machinery, while bright orange display stands hold various artefacts related to the steel industry.

Visitors can explore interactive exhibits that tell the story of Ravne’s centuries-old steelmaking tradition, set within modern architecture that breathes new life into the town’s industrial past. The next phase of the project will see the restoration of a former workers’ residence with a laundry, completing the transformation of the museum area by 2026.

The site is part of the Carinthian Regional Museum (Koroški pokrajinski muzej), which preserves and presents the rich industrial heritage of the area.

Ravne na Koroškem – The Heart of Koroška

The largest town in Slovenia’s Koroška region, Ravne na Koroškem is known for its ironworking heritage, sports culture, Forma viva steel sculptures and literary legacy. The town’s cultural vitality is reflected in the Dr. Franc Sušnik Central Carinthian Library housed in Ravne Castle and in the museum collections that preserve its industrial story.
