Bled Among the World’s Best Tourism Villages by UN Tourism

The Municipality of Bled has been officially named one of the Best Tourism Villages in the World as part of the prestigious Best Tourism Villages by UN Tourism initiative, awarded by the United Nations Tourism Organization (UN Tourism). This global recognition highlights Bled’s holistic and sustainable approach to rural tourism development, placing it among the leading sustainable destinations worldwide.

Launched in 2021, the Best Tourism Villages by UN Tourism initiative annually celebrates outstanding rural destinations that use tourism as a driver for preserving natural and cultural heritage, while fostering social and economic development. Its mission is to reduce regional disparities, combat rural depopulation and safeguard traditional ways of life and cultural diversity.

The title Best Tourism Village honours destinations that successfully preserve and promote their rural and community values while integrating innovation and sustainability into their tourism strategies. Although non-financial in nature, the award brings international prestige and provides access to UN Tourism’s expert guidance and global network to support the ongoing development of sustainable practices.

Applications to the initiative are submitted through national tourism organizations — in Slovenia’s case, the Slovenian Tourist Board (STB). Each member state may nominate up to eight villages that meet the set criteria: fewer than 15,000 inhabitants, low population density and an economy closely tied to traditional sectors such as agriculture, forestry or fisheries.

In the national selection for 2025, the STB shortlisted eight exemplary candidates, among which Bled impressed the international expert panel of the United Nations Tourism Organization. The municipality demonstrated excellence across all nine areas of sustainable development used for evaluation — including cultural and natural heritage, heritage protection, economic, social, and environmental sustainability, and destination management.

Bled received this distinguished title at the official award ceremony held during the third annual Best Tourism Villages Network Meeting in Huzhou City, China.

By joining the global Best Tourism Villages Network, Bled gains access to a platform for sharing best practices, professional training opportunities and international promotional support from UN Tourism.

Bled now joins the ranks of previous Slovenian awardees – Solčava and Radovljica (2021) and Bohinj (2022) – reaffirming Slovenia’s position as a leader in sustainable tourism on a global scale.
