The title was awarded by European Best Destinations (EBD), one of Europe’s leading organisations promoting culture, travel and sustainable tourism. In partnership with more than 500 tourism offices, the EDEN Network and renowned media such as Forbes, Condé Nast and National Geographic, EBD highlights Europe’s most authentic and exceptional destinations.

Each year, millions of travellers take part in EBD’s campaigns, voting for the continent’s most beautiful, meaningful, and culturally rich places. These designations celebrate diversity, heritage and the power of local traditions to shape Europe’s identity.

Ptuj ranked #1 among Europe’s cultural heritage towns

For 2026, Ptuj has earned the top position in the Top 10 Cultural Heritage Towns in Europe, recognised for its remarkable preservation of cultural heritage, distinctive architecture, and vibrant living traditions.

The aerial photograph shows the historic town of Ptuj. In the foreground stands Ptuj Castle, overlooking the old town. Narrow medieval streets lined with red-roofed houses stretch toward the Drava River, visible in the distance. In the lower right corner, a white laurel wreath graphic reads: “Best Cultural Heritage Town in Europe – Ptuj.”

With its 1,000-year-old castle overlooking the Drava River, a renowned winemaking legacy, and a calendar filled with festivals and cultural events, Ptuj exemplifies a town that not only safeguards its history but continually brings it to life.

Signature events such as the Kurentovanje Carnival, Art Stays contemporary art festival, Arsana music festival, Days of Poetry and Wine, Roman and Castle Games and Advent in Ptuj keep the town pulsing with cultural energy throughout the year.

The surrounding landscape complements this vitality: rolling vineyards, riverside cycling routes and local gastronomy create an inviting harmony between nature and culture. Salon Sauvignon, Kitchen in Town and Specialties of Slovenian Farms celebrate the region’s culinary creativity, while Ptujska Klet, Slovenia’s oldest wine cellar, and Flavours of Ptuj menus in select restaurants preserve and reinterpret tradition for today’s visitors.

With easy access, boutique accommodations, authentic hospitality, and wellness experiences at Terme Ptuj, the town offers a perfect blend of heritage and contemporary comfort.

Recognition of dedication and passion

This international recognition reflects the dedication of local residents, cultural institutions and tourism professionals who continue to protect, promote and share Ptuj’s heritage with the world. Their collective effort ensures that the town remains a living monument to Slovenia’s cultural richness.
