World Food Day: Slovenia Celebrates Food With Purpose

World Food Day: Slovenia Celebrates Food With Purpose

Every year on October 16, World Food Day reminds us of the power of food – to connect people, nourish communities and shape a more sustainable future. In Slovenia, food is a reflection of identity, landscape and respect for nature.

From the Alps to the Adriatic, Slovenian chefs, farmers and producers are united by a shared philosophy: food should be good for both people and the planet. Every region in Slovenia contributes its own flavours – from the mountain pastures of Gorenjska to the fertile plains of Prekmurje and the sunlit vineyards of the Mediterranean coast – yet all are guided by the same values of respect for nature and authenticity. Slovenia’s pocket size allows for a uniquely close relationship between those who grow, produce and prepare food, ensuring that freshness and traceability are part of every meal.

As the world’s first country to be declared a Green Destination in its entirety, Slovenia’s culinary scene stands as a model for sustainable gastronomy. Its chefs celebrate what each season brings, transform traditional recipes into contemporary creations and minimise food waste through innovation and thoughtful sourcing. Whether in a Michelin-starred restaurant, a local gostilna, a farm or a mountain hut, the same story unfolds – one of harmony between people, place and produce.

Across the country, initiatives such as Slovenia Green Cuisine, Zero Waste events and Green Michelin Star restaurants – from Hiša Franko in the Soča Valley to Hotel Plesnik in the Logar Valley – show how sustainability can be both delicious and innovative. Farmers’ markets thrive in towns large and small, while talented chefs reimagine traditional recipes with contemporary flair, guided by the rhythm of nature.

On World Food Day, Slovenia invites everyone to celebrate food with purpose – to taste the seasons, respect nature and cherish every drop, grain and flavour that make this small country a big inspiration for the world.

The official 2025 World Food Day poster by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. Across the top, it reads “16 October 2025 – World Food Day.” Below, the slogan says “Hand in Hand for Better Food and a Better Future.” The image shows six diverse people standing side by side, each representing different roles in global food production: a child holding carrots, a woman holding a goat, a young woman with vegetables, a man with wheat, a beekeeper holding jars of honey, and an older man with fish and root vegetables. In the background are stylized images of farmland, crops, and a gradient sky in shades of teal, green, and yellow. In the top corners are the FAO’s 80th-anniversary logo and the FAO emblem. At the bottom right are the hashtags #WorldFoodDay, #FAO80, #FoodHeroes, and a QR code for more information.
