The Day of Slovenian Sport: A Holiday of Pride, Connection and Passion for Movement

Sports events, the achievements of Slovenian athletes, and a deep-rooted love of movement are woven into everyday life in Slovenia. This is why The Day of Slovenian Sport, celebrated on September 23, has become a national symbol of a country recognized worldwide as both green and active. This holiday further reinforces Slovenia’s place on the international stage, embodying values of pride, connection, and a passion for exercise and healthy living.

Slovenia – a Global Sports Phenomenon

The Day of Slovenian Sport is when the nation celebrates its sporting spirit – and it is also an invitation for everyone to discover the unique active experiences that Slovenia, in all its diversity, has to offer. International sporting events hosted in Slovenia not only enhance the country’s visibility but also contribute to higher destination occupancy, particularly outside the main tourist season, while extending the average length of stay. At the same time, the STB actively promotes the sustainable organization of sporting events, ensuring that growth goes hand in hand with responsibility.

As the driving force behind responsible tourism development, the STB recognizes the vital role of international sporting events. In the summer of 2025 alone, it was involved in more than 80 events as well as major world and European championships held in Slovenia. These events not only strenghten Slovenia’s reputation as a leading sustainable destination for active recreation and sports training, but also amplify the recognition and value of the I Feel Slovenia brand on a global scale.

Last summer, the STB took part in more than 60 international sporting events across Slovenia. Altogether, the events attracted nearly 30,000 foreign athletes, their teams and fans, while also bringing Slovenia into the spotlight for media representatives from around the globe. Through extensive television coverage and online broadcasts, hundreds of millions of sports enthusiasts were introduced to the country. Each event is an exceptional platform to showcase Slovenia as a green, active and welcoming destination.
