Luka Dončić and Team Slovenia Win Hearts at EuroBasket 2025

Slovenia once again proved the strength of its sporting spirit at EuroBasket 2025. Led by the ambassador of Slovenian tourism and global basketball superstar Luka Dončić, the national team showcased heart, passion and excellence on the court.

Luka Dončić, who is also the ambassador of Slovenian tourism, impressed with his dedication and brilliance in every game, reminding the world why he is one of the biggest names in basketball. Although Slovenia just missed out on a place in the semifinals, the team won the hearts of fans at home and abroad, further cementing the country’s image as a land of great sportsmanship.

For Dončić, representing Slovenia is always more than just basketball. Despite the demands of his NBA career, he dedicated his summer to preparing for the continent’s biggest tournament, guiding Slovenia to the quarterfinals. In a nail-biting clash, the team fell just short against reigning world champions Germany, but their performance resonated with fans everywhere.

Global Spotlight on Dončić and Slovenia

Chosen as one of the faces of EuroBasket 2025, Dončić’s popularity was reflected in the thousands of fans seeking a photo or autograph, and in the millions of social media interactions surrounding him. According to Brand24, more than 20,000 mentions of Dončić were tracked on social media in the last month alone. Platforms of EuroBasket, the NBA, the Los Angeles Lakers and even the Slovenian Tourist Board lit up with highlights of his play and stories of his commitment to Slovenia.

The NBA celebrated his artistry on the court daily, praising both his scoring brilliance and his leadership as Slovenia’s captain. His NBA club, the Los Angeles Lakers, also shone a spotlight on Slovenia.

Club co-owner Jeanie Buss and general manager Rob Pelinka attended Dončić’s opening EuroBasket games, gaining significant attention from both international and Slovenian fans. Their visit sparked warm reactions and fueled hopes that they will soon visit Slovenia to experience the country through Dončić’s eyes.

A Team With a Big Sporting Heart

Dončić emphasized throughout the games that playing for Slovenia is a unique honour and his teammates echoed that sentiment with their performances. The national team displayed courage and dedication, defeating powerhouse Italy in the round of 16 before bowing out to Germany. Their determination and sportsmanship resonated deeply, earning admiration from fans worldwide.

Individually, Dončić confirmed his world-class form, ranking among the top scorers and defenders of the championship until the quarterfinals. His creativity, energy and drive also reassured Lakers fans that he is ready for a stellar NBA season.

Looking Ahead: A Bright Future for Slovenian Basketball

The Slovenian team is already focused on the road ahead, with qualifiers for the 2027 FIBA World Championship in Qatar approaching and participation in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles firmly in their sights.

In even more exciting news, Slovenia will host part of EuroBasket 2029. Ljubljana’s Stožice Arena will be one of the championship venues, alongside Estonia, Greece and Spain. Backed by the Government of the Republic of Slovenia, the tournament will once again bring the best of European basketball to Slovenia’s capital, reinforcing the country’s role on the international sporting stage.

At EuroBasket 2025, Slovenia may not have lifted a trophy, but the team lifted spirits and inspired countless fans — a true testament to the nation’s big sporting heart.
