Renowned Werner Herzog Filmed in Postojna Cave

Legendary German filmmaker Werner Herzog, recipient of this year’s Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Film Festival (27 August – 6 September), has chosen Slovenia’s Postojna Cave as one of the main locations for his latest film, Bucking Fastard. The film stars sisters Rooney and Kate Mara, alongside Orlando Bloom and Domhnall Gleeson.

Describing Postojna Cave as “the most incredible cave in the world,” Herzog praised its beauty and atmosphere, which he identified as the symbolic “core of the Earth” in the film. The production, shot in Ireland and Slovenia, explores themes of identity, perception and the search for meaning in life.

Following the filming, which concluded in April 2025, Herzog signed the Cave’s Golden Book of VIP visitors, leaving a heartfelt message of gratitude. Welcomed by Kaja Batagelj, Director of Postojnska jama, Herzog underlined the poetic quality of the cave, already celebrated for its awe-inspiring formations, unique fauna, underground railway and historic subterranean post office.

Critics have already hailed Bucking Fastard as an extraordinary and original work, completing a thematic triptych with Herzog’s Fitzcarraldo and Grizzly Man.
